An infrared filter blocks visible light that enters the camera lens and only pass infrared light, creating an images that are both familiar and strange. The world captured in infrared, just beyond visible spectrum, is surreal and serene, almost unnaturally crisp and full of contrasts.

Usually monochrome or nearly so, IR images make for some truly stunning black-and-white photography, rich in contrast and tonalities. It adds to your b&w shots a unique dramatical edge, entirely different from what what you´ve known so far.

As an amount of light that enters the lens through an infrared filter is much lower that usual, the best effects can be obtained on a long exposure times and using a tripod. For that reason an infrared filter is perfect for a landscape or still life photography.

Infrared filters are classified by the wavelength of the light they let pass through (for example 720 nanometers, 850 nanometers, etc ...) Filters of smaller wavelength (720nm) let pass through more infrared light and normal light. When using the filter of 720nm you need less time of exhibition to obtain a visible photography. With the filters of 850 and 950nm you need more time of exhibition as it increases the value of the wavelength. Each filter offers a different effect with different ranges of colors and intensities. The following filters are the most commonly used.
